Birthday Party on a Budget: The Drinks

January 19, 2010

Before I dive into the drinks I got for Emma’s party, I wanted to let you know that I’m trying to throw a nice birthday party — complete with some splurgy items — for my daughter’s 5th birthday. While I don’t want to go overboard, I don’t want to be stingy either. In trying to find a balance, I’m documenting my little experiment here. I’m starting out with a $25 prepaid Visa that I won from playing an instant win game on the Huggies Enjoy the Ride website. I know that won’t buy everything, but it’s a good start!

Today I tackled phase 1 of Emma’s birthday party…. The drinks. We’re not doing a kids’ party, just one with our family. We’ll have about 20 people at the party, and some will have driven quite a ways. We wanted to offer pop instead of lemonade/punch, knowing that they might need a little caffeinated pick-me up by the time they arrived.

CVS was very helpful this week as they were offering a great ECB deal on Pepsi products. The deal was that you got six 12-packs for $20. Then you got $10 ECBs back. I happened to have $12 in ECBs in my wallet, so my out-of-pocket was only $8.00 for six 12-packs. That’s only $1.33 per 12-pack. I also have a couple of two-liter decaf drinks already stashed in my kitchen. We’ll probably be using those too.

I’m checking drinks off my to-do list. Stay tuned for more party planning updates. We’ll see how little I can spend while throwing a great party!
