CVS: How Body Wash Bought Granola Bars

June 17, 2010

If this doesn’t prove how my shopping habits have changed over the past couple of years, I don’t know what will! You see, we don’t need any more body wash in our house. I’ve found so many great body wash deals that I avoid that aisle completely when shopping. But I will buy body wash if it means earning money to buy something else. Confused?  Let me explain my most recent CVS shopping trips.

Trip #1

On this trip, I started with $4 in Extra Care Bucks (ECBs).  Here’s what I bought.

Each body was was $4, but I had a Buy 1 – Get 1 FREE coupon from the 6/6 P&G coupon insert. That means that these only cost me $4.00 for both. I used my $4 ECBs and paid a little bit of tax. The best part…… I got back $8.00 in ECBs!  Each body wash generated $4 in ECBs. For the details on how to do this transaction, read my post about this week’s body wash moneymaker.

Trip #2

I took my $8 of ECBs and headed back to CVS a couple of days later. This time I was on the hunt for granola bars. We were completely out, and I wanted to restock.  Here’s what I got on this trip.

These granola bars are 3 for $10.00 this week. I had $1.30 in coupons for them, bringing my total down to $8.70. I used the $8.00 ECBs from the body wash trip, and I only paid $.70 for all three boxes. The best part…. This transaction generated a $4 ECB coupon.

That means that I ended up with the same number of ECBs that I started with. I spent very little to get three boxes of our favorite kinds of granola bars!

The Moral of the Story

Don’t overlook items that you don’t need, especially if they are items that can help you double your ECBs without spending more than pennies. You can use those extra ECBs to buy items that you need. And, like me, you can donate the items you don’t need. By the way, this body wash is NOT going in our cupboards but to our local food pantry.

Note: If your CVS is out of the body wash that’s on sale this week, remember to get a rain check!
