CVS Trip: It Pays to Pay Attention

October 9, 2011

Merchandise Value: $40.07
Out-of-Pocket Cost: $2.84 + tax
Savings: $37.23 (93%)

I got to go solo to CVS today. It’s a good thing because I usually pay attention better when I’m by myself. I had a great trip with two transactions planned. After the first one, I should have gotten back $9 in ECBs. I only got $1. Well that just wouldn’t do. When I checked my receipt, I also realized that one of the toothpastes rang up at the regular price instead of the sale price.

Fortunately, I had a patient and cheerful cashier who immediately made it all right. I got my other $8 ECBs and was on to my second transaction. Here’s how the trip breaks down:

Transaction #1:
1 Coke Zero – $1.77
2 Garnier Nutrisse Hair Colors – $5.99 each
1 Sensodyne Pronamel – $4.49
1 Sensodyne Iso-Active – $5.99
1 Tone Soap 2-pack – $1.88

Coupons Used:
-$5/$25 Purchase CVS coupon received via email
FREE Coke Zero coupon from My Coke Rewards
– 2 $2/1 Garnier Nutrisse Shade or Multi-Lights Kit 9/25/2011 RP Insert (exp 11/5/2011)
– $1/1 Sensodyne Iso-Active
– $1/1 Sensodyne Pronamel
– $10.50 ECBs from last trip & quarterly rewards

Out-of-Pocket Cost: $2.84 + tax
ECBs Earned: $9.00 ($3 Garnier, $5 Sensodyne, $1 Tone)

Transaction #2:
2 Tums – $3.99 each
2 Finish Dishwasher Tabs – $2.99 each

Coupons Used:
– 2 $1/1 Finish Quantum, Powerball or Gelpac 9/18/2011 SS Insert (exp 10/23/2011)
– 2 $2/1 Tums CVS store coupons from the magic coupon machine
– $8 ECBs from Transaction #1

Out-of-Pocket Cost: $0 + tax
ECBs Earned: $0

I burned a lot of ECBs on this trip, but I got a lot of things that we needed. I’m left with just $1 ECBs for next week.  I think my receipt is showing that I hit another $50 mark with the CVS Beauty Club, so I should see another $5 ECB print at the magic coupon machine the next time I’m there.

If you’re planning to do the Garnier deal or the Sensodyne deal, those two did not trigger the ECBs the way they should have. So keep a close eye on your receipts!
