She’s only six. Well… almost seven. But her wisdom never ceases to amaze me. Our conversation went something like this.
Emma: Mommy, do we know anyone who has no money at all?
Me: Hmm…. I don’t think we do, honey.
Emma: Well, maybe we should go meet someone with no money and give them some of ours.
Wow.
We went on to have a conversation about how the money we put in the Salvation Army kettles goes to help people who need clothes and food. We talked about how she could give some of her toys she no longer plays with to kids who don’t have many toys. My husband also suggested that we go help with the local soup kitchen sometime soon.
I love her generous spirit and how she’s thinking of others during a time of year when it’s so easy for kids to get drawn into the gimme mindset. Maybe it is high time for us to go meet some people with no money and give them some of ours.

Our children… always the best teachers. Makes me sad that *I’m* the one who sometimes puts a lid on it. Just last week our 4yo grabbed her piggy bank and wanted to put a bill in the collection. It was a $10 bill. We made her switch it out for a $1. She doesn’t know the difference… but still.

Awww… I just love that giving spirit though! I think I’ll have to be very intentional about it this year. Maybe 2012 will be the Year of Giving. 🙂
