Last week I told you that Emma was going to try to train our dog Lizzie to listen to her, not just to the grown-ups in the house. We spent this week using our new treats to encourage Lizzie to obey Emma’s commands.
Emma decided that her mission would be to get Lizzie to roll over without barking. When Lizzie was really young, we taught her a series of tricks in a specific order… sit, shake, speak, lay down, roll over. With Emma’s sensitivity to sound, the speak part of that routine was not fun. So, this week we worked on getting Lizzie to sit and then roll over… no barking.
The first couple of days the bark was definitely there. Emma was persistent, only giving Lizzie a treat when she did not bark and using her ‘big girl voice’ to reprimand Lizzie when she barked. The message must have sunk in. Because here’s what we have now.
We had one happy dog who LOVED the Milk-Bone® Minis and the Pup-Peroni Lean treats (even though we ended up cutting the Pup-Peroni treats into small pieces so that one treat got about 8 roll-overs).
We had one happy girl who was just tickled that the dog was listening to HER and not barking in the process. Overall, I’d call this training a success.
Of course, Lizzie just wanted to keep playing when we were done. The toys Emma picked out for her were a hit. So Emma & Lizzie ended their training session with this.

Lizzie has the same cute little rat feet my Toy Fox Terrier has. Total cuteness and I love that your daughter did such a great job.

Thanks Lala! We all had a ball working on this project, and it’s really paid off. 🙂
