Intentional Christmas Play

December 5, 2011

As we wrapped up our series An Organized Christmas, I found myself in the mindset of being very intentional this Christmas. It’s too easy to let the whole month of December fly by in a busy whirl of parties, decorations, and baking. Stopping to savor the moments takes being intentional.

I was reminded of being intentional as we unpacked our Christmas decorations. One of our favorite items to uncover each year is our Fisher Price Little People Nativity set. My parents gave this to Emma several years ago, and every year I’m amazed at the joy she gets from playing with it.

This year was different though.

Yes, she was excited… thrilled even… to see the set as I pulled it out of the storage tub. But this year she didn’t just start moving the Little People around. Instead, she ran back to her room, grabbed her old Beginner’s Bible, and began to read aloud the story of Jesus’ birth, beginning with the angel visiting Mary. As she read, she used the Little People figures to play out the story.

I didn’t realize what she was doing at first. But once I did, I was captivated. She was so intent on the story. I was able to snap a few pictures as she walked through the story.

First we have Joseph, Mary, and Jesus with a couple of animals.

Next the angel made the grand announcement to the shepherds.

And of course the shepherds all rushed to the stable to meet Jesus.

Next came the wise men… one of them in a cart pulled by a donkey. 🙂

At the close of the story, everyone was assembled, ready to worship the baby Jesus.

And quite honestly, I don’t think I could’ve told the story better than she did. What a wonder to view the story of Jesus’ birth through the eyes of a child.

Thank you for sharing! I love how she incorporated the figures into the story. Emma is such a sweet girl, and her hair is so long now! I remember Hannah playing with various nativity sets over the years, and we really enjoyed listening to her role playing with the pieces.

Thanks, Kathy! She’s really taken to this set in particular. I just loved that she took the initiative to grab her Bible. I wouldn’t have thought of that!

Thanks, Meg. 🙂 She is a constant reminder of God’s love and blessings. That’s for sure. (And she would totally love to come and ride shopping carts with you sometime!)
