Works for Me Wednesday: Grab Your Quarters

November 11, 2009

I had my first sighting! There was no bell ringing quite yet, but the Salvation Army kettle was being manned outside our Kroger store yesterday. While that’s a bit earlier than I’m used to seeing them, I welcome the sight of these red kettles as a real-life teaching tool.

Starting now, I’ll keep a stash of quarters in my purse or in the van. I like to use the ringing of the Salvation Army bells to explain to Emma that not everyone is as fortunate as we are. I like to tell her that there are kids who don’t have enough clothes or very many toys. Then I encourage her to put the quarters into the bucket to help kids who need them. Last year it seemed to sink it, as she started to explain it back to us when she heard the ringing of the bells. She let us know that the kids’ mommies and daddies would use those quarters to buy clothes and toys for the kids who didn’t have them.

That’s my girl!
