Giving: Giant Eagle Helps People Struggling for Food

July 22, 2010

The following information is being provided for us by Jen from Cherry Picker. She has graciously allowed me to share this information with you in hopes that you will jump in and help.

Kudos to Giant Eagle for reminding each of us that no matter how little we have, there’s always someone that has less than we do.
3.5 percent of U.S. households experience hunger. Last year, people in 4.8 million American households used private food pantries, compared with 3.9 million just three years prior.
Giant Eagle is making it easy for us to provide for  others. They have given up retail space to make it effortless to donate.  I was in seven different Giant Eagle locations last week.  There were drop off boxes between the register and the exit at all but one location.  Natually I looked in and there were donations inside each box. Were they yours?

How much easier can it be?

  1. Cut Out 4 Wheaties Coupons.
  2. Tuck them in your purse (my big problem).
  3. Go in Giant Eagle to do your normal shopping.
  4. Throw 4 boxes of Wheaties from the cereal mountain found in the vestibule of almost every Giant Eagle.
  5. Ask your bagger to put all the cereal in one bag.
  6. Pay $4.00 Out-of-pocket.
  7. Collect 15¢ Foodperks INSTANTLY.
  8. Add to your next 10¢ Foodperks by deducting $4.00 from the $50.00 that will give you your next 10¢.
  9. Toss them in the donation box on the way out of the store.
Consider this…. Do you get emails from your choir, knitting group , golf group …your coworkers?  A group of people that you could potentially see within the next week.  Ask them if they would be willing to share their Wheaties coupon from last Sunday for a “donation project.” you are involved in.  Or ask them to print out two of the  Cinnabon coupon and/or Cheerios coupons  for you.
The phrase ‘donation project’ has a visual image of  covering miles in a walkathon or creating something.  While those are very worthy ways to donate, you will be buying groceries that don’t need to be hauled or put away.
After Fuelperks consideration, if  you bought 4 boxes of Wheaties, your donation would be more than free.  Your four boxes of Cinnabon donation would be $1.50.  How about donating 4 boxes of Cheerios?  It will only cost you $5.60 cents now and you’ll still save at the gas pump.
