Letting Them Grow Up {31 Days of Becoming an Intentional Parent}

Can’t she just stay small forever?

There are some days when that’s my heart’s desire. Then she decides to make a grown-up decision, and my heart is incredibly proud of the big girl she’s becoming.

She’s our only, so this is uncharted water. We’re trying to find the balance between holding on tight and protecting her innocence and letting her go to try new things, make mistakes, and learn as a big kid. We can feel the push and pull from her. One minute she’s wanting to snuggle in close with us on the couch. The next she’s wanting to read bedtime stories by herself. {gulp}

She wants to be a big girl. And that’s good.

I’ve been trying to include her in some bigger girl things and even expecting a little more from her work-wise around the house. Some days she balks at it, but other days she holds tight to it and does the work proudly. “I can help you with that because I’m big and a great helper,” she says. And she’s right.

Now we have to be intentional about finding ways for her to embrace her more grown-up self bit by bit.
