From the first song of hers I heard (What Love Really Means), I was struck by the uniqueness of JJ Heller’s voice. I just received an advance copy of her new CD Loved (which releases today!). What struck me this time around was the tough life lessons that she addresses in the lyrics of this album. Instead of the simple joys of life, love, and new parenthood, this CD tackles the issues of illness, death, and broken marriages. It reflects real life in the community that the Hellers are part of, making it a beautiful reflection of the real life that most of us see all around us.
“LOVED is a collection of songs that belong together; there’s a common thread connecting all of them,” JJ says. “It’s setting our sights on the horizon opposed to the few steps in front of us. It’s an album about resolve. It’s about steeling ourselves for the journey in front of us, but being assured of who we are and where our destiny lies.”
With these weighty lyrics, the beauty of love and our Creator shine through. I’m guessing that at least one of the songs on this CD will resound with everyone. And they remind us all to step out of fear and into trust; to rest easier through life’s trials.
