Teaching Kids About Money: Use a Coupon to Stretch a Gift Card

August 18, 2012

See that smile? That’s the happy face of a little lady who was ready to turn her $7 gift card into a $12 value.

She had a Toys ‘R Us gift card left from her birthday, and it had $7 left on it. Earlier this week, Toys ‘R Us was offering a $5 off any $5+ purchase coupon on their site. I saw this as an opportunity to teach her the value of a coupon. I showed her that if she put the $5 coupon WITH her $7 gift card, she had $12. That meant that she could get the big Strawberry Shortcake set. (The $20 in her hand is Mommy’s contribution. The set was $12.99, so I kicked in the $.99 and tax.)

I’m sure it will take a few more times for the lesson to truly stick, but she’s enjoying her new toy and the fact that she was able to get it with the coupon. Happy girl… Happy mommy.
