Father’s Day: Doubly Blessed

June 19, 2010

I’ve heard many people talk about their fathers in a very negative way. Some have fathers who were absent. Others have fathers who were there physically but absent emotionally. Still others have fathers who were abusive or neglectful. And while I can offer a listening ear to these people, I can’t relate.

My dad is amazing. Sure, we had our moments when I was growing up. Who didn’t? But I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that my dad would be there for me… no matter what. In fact, he put up with a LOT from me! But that didn’t change his love for me.

I know you all love these pictures
of me and my parents from the ’70s!

Just this past week I had to go to the hospital at 6:30 in the morning because I was having an allergic reaction to the new asthma medicine my doctor gave me. It wasn’t a life-threatening emergency, but I didn’t want to wait for the doctor’s office to open. So I asked Jason to stay home and get Emma ready for her vacation Bible school.

I started driving to the ER and realized that I would really like to have someone there with me. (Just being in the ER makes your blood pressure rise, doesn’t it!?) I knew my dad would be up, so I called him. He was already halfway to work but detoured to head to the ER to meet me.

Did he even stop for a second to think about whether or not he would be missing part of his work day? Nope. Did he ask if I really needed him there? Definitely not. He simply asked me which ER and said that he would be there when I arrived. And he was. In fact, he even brought me breakfast.

That’s the kind of dad I have. A loving, supportive, drop-everything-to-meet-his-kids’-needs kind of dad. Oh, I’m blessed.

Emma is blessed with this same kind of daddy. Jason and Emma have an incredible relationship. She can jump on top of him and wrestle one minute and snuggle up in his lap the next. Whatever she needs, he’s there to respond. His discipline is firm but loving, desiring only the best for her. I’m amazed with his patience and in awe of what a wonderful daddy he is.

I am doubly blessed this Father’s Day!

If you happen to be one of those people whose father isn’t what you would consider your ideal dad, please remember that you have a Heavenly Father who loves you. He is perfect, and His love is perfect. I pray that you would run to Him this Father’s Day and find that amazing fatherly love that we all so desperately need.
