As I’ve tried to find the line between keeping a modest stockpile and hoarding (see Stockpiling vs. Hoarding post), I’ve found myself feeling guilty about keeping certain items that I consider luxuries.
Sometimes I’ll have coupons and deals that allow me to buy something that I normally wouldn’t buy for myself. It’s usually something that’s more expensive than the brands I purchase for my own use, or it’s a pampering item. For example, I would NEVER purchase $8 facial scrub for myself, especially when the Wal-Mart brand is only $2.50. That seems to be an indulgence.
But what if I bought it with coupons/deals that made it free or almost-free? I’m so used to living a frugal lifestyle and cutting back on indulgences that I almost feel guilty keeping more expensive items. So they usually end up in my donation box.
Last night I realized that I don’t have to give EVERYTHING away. Keeping a few items for myself and donating a few items maintains a good balance. I can indulge myself a little (at little or no cost) and offer some pampering and personal care items to those who have less than I do.
There’s nothing wrong with pampering myself a little along the way. And now I can do it with the right attitude…. Sharing with those who need it and taking care of myself too.
