We love bake-at-home fries, especially sweet potato fries. When we first tried sweet potato fries, I thought I’d try my hand at making some homemade dipping sauces for them. Here’s what I came up with.
Spicy Ranch Dipping Sauce
1 cup Ranch dressing
1 tsp. chili powder
Stir until combined and chill for 30 minutes.
Family Reaction: This one had just a little kick to it. I didn’t think it did right after I mixed it, but the spiciness increased as it sat in the fridge. We liked it, but maybe not for dipping sweet potato fries. In fact, we tried it with pretzels and liked it even better for that kind of dipping. But if you prefer something a little kicky for your fries, this might be just the sauce.
Sweet BBQ Dipping Sauce
1 cup regular BBQ sauce
2 Tbls. brown sugar
2 Tbls. honey
Stir until combined and chill for 30 minutes.
Family Reaction: This was the favorite hands-down. My goal was to make something similar to the Bob Evans sweet potato fry dipping sauce, and I think I came pretty close. Everyone agreed that it was a perfect accent for the fries.
Cinnamon Honey Butter
1 stick of butter (softened)
2 T. honey
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Whip the butter until it’s fluffy. Add the honey and cinnamon and whip again until combined. Do not refrigerate before serving.
Family Reaction: While this had a great taste to it, it wasn’t ideal for dipping our fries. It was a little too thick. We’ll probably end up using this mixture on pancakes or toast instead of on our leftover fries.
My next goal is to come up with a good recipe for the fries themselves. So far we’ve only tried this with frozen ones. Anyone have a good recipe for homemade?

Your butter/honey spread sounds yumy. The first time I ate sweet potato fries, they came with a little scoop of fluffy butter down in the center of them, with honey drizzled over the butter. They were fantastic!
I scrub, peel, and cut up my potatoes-white and sweet-and put them in a bowl. Drizzle some olive oil over them, toss to coat with the oil. I then sprinkle on seasonings…most often, I use a salt-free seasoning blend I purchase at Big Lots. (I’ve also used “French Fry Seasoning”[also available at BL] on them, but usually I avoid using that much salt.)
I roast them in a single layer on a cookie sheet-probably much the same directions as the frozen ones give.
My family loves these and it’s less expensive to make your own. I know people say to rinse and dry the white potatoes but a quick rinse once I’ve peeled them is all they get here. The sweet potatoes sometimes get peeled, sometimes not. It all depends on how the skins look. 😉

I wish I’d seen your recipes yesterday – we had sweet potato fries for lunch 🙂
As for frying the sweet potatoes themselves, I’ve always just sliced them and deep fried them in coconut oil. Not sure if that’s the proper way, but they turn out pretty well.

That sounds yummy! I think I’ve just been chicken to experiment. I need to give it a try!

Thanks for the dipping sauce recipes! I especially liked reading about your families reactions.

You’re welcome. 🙂 There were some we loved and some that would’ve been better for something else. They all tasted good though!

Hey, I have been making my own sweet potato fries for a few years. I have tried the frozen ones, but like the fresh ones better. Much like Karen, I scrub them, and cut out any bad spots, I never peel them to get all the vitamins possible. Then I just lay them on a cookie sheet (no rinsing) and drizzle olive oil on them, just a little, and mix them well with my hands. Then I sprinkle a little chili powder, and a tiny bit of cayenne pepper if you want more heat, and mix well and lay them out in the pan with a tiny bit of space for air flow. Roast them for 15 – 25 minutes depending on size and crunch at 425 degrees. The sugars caramelize and have a little sweet spice. I like them dipped in sour cream!
Can’t wait for them to go on sale this fall! yum yum!
