A special welcome to those of you stopping by from Decorchick!
I’ve always looked at a long soak in a hot bath as a luxury, but my mindset is starting to change. I’m reading more evidence of how beneficial soaking in a bath can be. When I take the time to soak, I want to make sure that I’m getting as many benefits as possible. So let’s detox our baths – and make the most of our soaking time – using a recipe from Melissa Poepping’s book The Chemical Free Home. {Keep reading to find out how to get a copy of this little gem.}
This Therapeutic Bath Soak combines the detoxifying power of salts and baking soda with the skin soothing power of milk and cornstarch. Milk baths not only soften your skin, but they may help soothe the irritation of eczema and other skin discomforts. The lactic acid also helps remove dead skin cells which leaves your skin smoother.
The salts help your nervous system relax by increasing the magnesium levels in the body. They also help reduce swelling and lessen muscle pain. Combined with baking soda, they have an amazing detoxifying effect on the body, drawing toxins out of the body through the skin.
Our Therapeutic Bath Soak recipe also calls for essential oils. This is where you can let your creativity go to work. Here are some suggestions for oils to add to your soak:
- Lavender (relaxation)
- Stress Away (relaxation)
- Thieves (immune boosting)
- Lemon (energy boosting)
- Peace & Calming (relaxation)
- Valor (relaxation)
You can choose your favorite or mix and match.
Therapeutic Bath Soak
Adapted from the recipe by Melissa Poepping in The Chemical Free Home
Ingredients:
4 cups Dry Milk Powder
2 cups Cornstarch
2 cups Baking Soda
2 cups Dead Sea Salt
1 cup Epsom Salt
24-48 drops Young Living Essential Oils
Directions:
- Mix dry ingredients with wire whisk until well blended.
- Fill your desired containers 2/3 full.
- Shake until oils are well blended.
- Finish filling containers.
- Add 1 more drop to the top of each container.
- Shake once more.
- Use 1/2 cup (or more if desired) per warm bath.
*This will bubble with a jetted tub.
Note: I chose to wait to mix in the oils. That way each family member can choose their favorite oils when they’re ready to take a bath.

I made this and it caused a burning sensation on my skin. Could that be the baking soda or maybe the cornstarch??
Jennifer Bruce says
I’ve not heard of that before. Do you happen to have a milk allergy?
Daisy says
Turns out if I am only soaking for less than 10 minutes it’s fine, but longer than that my skin starts to get irritated. I am guessing it’s the baking soda.
JoDee says
i would say it is the Dead Sea salt, it is some powerful stuff. I usually only add 4-6 tablespoons to my recipes.

A fast quit to the bathroom and a brush with water alone right after your coffee is
even better than just obtaining a glass
of water.
